How about the WinDV utility to do a test capture (link on my Setup > Other
Software page, in the Utilities section)

How about trying the camcorder and cable on other computers.. or another
camcorder and cable on yours... you don't say if you've had a history of
success and then hit a wall, or if this is your first time doing firewire
capture...

PapaJohn,Graham or those may concren,

Intel Celeron 1.7
512 ram
30 GB hard drive - 16 GB free
Sony HandyCam Digital8 Sony DCR-TRV203 (1999 model i think but not listed on
papaJohn site) with DV plug
Firewire PCI card (VIA Chipset)
6FT 6 Pin to 4 Pin Firewire Cable

softwares tested --- PowerDirector, Ulead 5, Movie Maker 2
connection --- connect the Firewire card and the Handycam DV output with
Firewire cable, position to VTR on the camcorder

problem: all hardwares are tested and working. the only problem is when
capturing with all 3 softwares i came across the followings:

powerDirector - hangs for 5 mins and then error message says unable to
retrieve DV status

ulead videostudio 5 - can't capture anything

MovieMaker 2 - captures for about 10 secs and freezes, wait for few mins and
error message says unable to save file.

Am I missing anything here that i am not aware of? I have been working on
this for the last 3 days and it's getting frustrating and hope that you guys
can help.

thank you.

Thanks.

Yes, this is actually my first time so still newbie.
I have tried with WinDV and same thing happen, after about 15 secs, it
freezes but the camcorder still keeps running.

I also tried to unplug the firewire card and reinstalled all the drivers but
no luck.

I only have one desktop and my laptop doesn't have the firewire port so i
can't really test it on other machine.

Any other suggestions?
thanks

From all the posts I've read over the past few years, it usually ends up
being either the firewire cable or card... that's why the need to test
whatever others you can.
