Capture Whole Screen with Scroll Bars?

H

Howard Schwartz

There are many utilities, including infranview, that will capture the
content of an open window. Indeed, it can be done just by hitting
ctrl-PrintScreen.

Few, but some, will capture a screen larger than the physical monitor
shows - that is, a virtual screen that a user can see in parts by
moving the scrollbars of a window down.

I vaguely recall one utility that would capture an image of an entire
virtual screen, by moving the scrollbars all the way down, but itself.

Any freeware program that can do this?

The folks at SnagIt ($ware) call it:

Scrolling Window Capture - Capture the contents of a window, including
the part not seen.

What kind of window are you trying to capture?

Most Initial Web pages, which are typically too large for my 17 inch
monitor set to 600 x 800 I believe, to show in their entire-ty.
Consequently, I usually get a firefox window, with scrollbars that
will show me the whole screen, bit by bit, as I move the scrollbars.

Yes, firefox and flashgot etc. can capture a whole page with images. But
they do so by downloading the html page, and each referred to image, as
a set of separate files.

I want to capture the whole screen as one image, in one (for instance
jpeg) file. Why? Because I frequently want to email friends a Webpage,
as on image that will just appear on their screen or they only need
to double click.

Many friends are not computer savey or tolerant enough to download many
attachment files, click on the main html page, and then delete after
viewing.

I find, if I merely send the URL, friends tend not to go there.

url2bmp is a Windows freeware converting an URL (complete web page) to
an image.

I don't know that the utility will capture the scroll bars, but why
would you need then with an image file as any image editor has its own
built in scrolling features.

find anything.

the problem with url2bmp is that you have to guess the final height,
unlike this payware programs that really do the scrolling for you.
For many shots this is not comfortable.

I know I found one programm in an older freeware version which is
uncrippled and can do scrolling screenshots, but I cannot remember
it's name. I have a copy installed at work, maybe tomorrow I can
take a look...

I do not need to `capture' the scroll bars, just mentioned them to
clarify what I meant by a virtual screen.

Unfortunately your freeware, url2bmp, ``needs IE4.1 or higher''. I
removed IE from my computer long ago, and do no want such a thing
on my hard disk. I mentioned in my post, I use firefox.

I realize, some people do not use IE, but keep it on their computer just
for software that requires it for for those darn html help pages, that
all make use have IE to read them.

My current solution, not horrible trouble, is to capture 1 to 3 images of
parts of the entire virtual Web screen. Then I use infranview to create a
`panoramic' image, that combines each of the partial images.

Did you try url2bmp?
I have just tried it on this install, WinXP Pro with no IE, seems to work
OK.

you are sure, the rendering engine of IE is not installed on

Is that possible?

Any freeware program that can do this?

Hey Howard,

This request comes up every so often and other than the one suggested, there is no true
freeware to do this. However, if you can endure a 30 sec start up screen (only appears
on startup of the program) you can find a fully functional program called CaptureNPrint
here that does what you want. I keep it just for instances when I want to capture the
entire screen. Of course you can eliminate the start up banner for a fee of $10.00.

http://www.geocities.com/blue_dragon_1964/main.html

From the site:

CaptureNPrint is Freeware/Bannerware (it is not Adware as it does not monitor your web
habits). It was an Adware program but I removed it because it was too big and it
requires the users to be connected to the internet. With version 4.5 and above,
CaptureNPrint contains only reciprocal links to sites that have association with
CaptureNPrint like:

www.tucows.com,
www.simtel.net,
www.download.com,
and other sites.

Hy,

oh yes the now mentioned "CaptureNPrint"* was it. But I remember
having problems with the latest version so I used a older one.
As I said I cannot take a look and Google is no help either.
But I know it works and this kind of adware is inside of the
acceptable limits, I think.

No, I'm not sure. Which files are associated with the IE rendering engine?
I'm not currently on that particular install but I'll do a bit of study
when I get on it later.
About a year ago I had a play with nLite-

http://www.nliteos.com/index.html

I have many versions of XP on CD after this experiment including WinXP
Home, and Pro, in vanilla, SP1, and SP2. Then I also have some versions
that are mildly chopped, and some that are severly chopped. If I remember
correctly the install in question is WinXP Pro SP1 severly chopped, i.e. no
internet explorer, media player, outlook express, drivers etc. Total ISO
size 115mb.
But I'm not sure if I ticked the box to remove the guts of IE or not, so if
you can tell me which files to look for I'll let you know.
Anything is possible. :)

location, maybe I can offer one myself tomorrow...

yes, with nLite you can remove IE from installation, *BUT* as
url2bmp works for you, I don't believe you have done so. I don't
know, which files you'll have to remove, and I don't care, because
I'm not with you on this IE paranoia. I use Firefox, but I see no
reason to remove IE. It is needed for modern help files (.chm -
HTML help), for Windows Update and AFAIK only dangerous if used
in obscure enviroments.

I installed 6.1.1.53, and when I press "Print Screen", I get an error. I
don't have a printer, and the help file says the default is printer ON.
But I don't see an option to turn it off. Maybe if I fix that, I won't get
an error?
