Capture picture from a DVD video?

I have a family video and I would like to capture a picture of my brother.
I can stop (pause) the video, take a Print Scrn snapshot and paste it into Paint.
I can crop what I want and do a Save-as.
But the resulting picture is just one big black square.
I tried pasting it into a word document. It show in Word, but when printed is just one black
square.
I tried pasting it into Irfanview. Did a save-as and when I reopen it, it is one black square.

Any other suggestions.

This is because video images are not actually stored in the video memory
that holds the desktop image. The video image is overlayed onto the desktop
image in the graphic card itself. Thus if you do a printscreen, you get the
desktop image, but not the video which is added during the video signal
generation.

Most DVD player utilities have a facility for making frame grabs. While I
can't speak for all such utilities, WinDVD and PowerDVD (probably the 2 most
common) most certainly do.
