I have a Panasonic NV DS8 camcorder and use a HP Pavilion 434 pc. Connected dvc thro fire wire port but when I went to capture video, error message read "A video capture device was not detected. Verify that a device is turned on and connected
properly, and then try again." How do I fix this please?

check it to hardware device manager, must be something wrong there.
try to reinstall the error driver, and then connect your camcorder, it
should work. I got the same problem with you while connecting my cam to my
comp. but it work fine now.

Good luck.

Do you get the XP ping when the cam is connected?
If not..
ensure cam is on and switched to vcr/playback mode.
cam is powered by mains and not battery.
check out the cable, cheap ones are very poor.
and as the last poster says check the card is not showing any errors in
device manager.
