Caption number initialize

Is it possible to initial the caption numbering to something other than 1?
I'm doing chapters of a book in a separate file and need to have globally
sequential caption numbers. Word allows setting the starting page number,
but I haven't found a way to do the same for caption numbers.

I don't know what Odie is referring to, Wendy, but here is an answer posted
to somebody else's inquiry:

Caption numbering is controlled by SEQ fields. Alt+F9 will toggle between the
field codes, and the field results. So Alt+F9 to see the SEQ (and other)
fields.

For the first SEQ field in the document, insert the /r 44 switch to force
numbering from this point on to begin with 44. Alt+F9 again to hide the
fields;
Ctrl+A, F9 to force them to update.

thanks ! do you know where I can find out more about the SEQ fields and the
caption numbering? MS Word help (2000) didn't have much.

Wish I knew. I looked and looked, but didn't find anything in the
documentation about it.

When you enter a caption, then right-click on the number it gives you.
Select Toggle Field Codes. You'll get something that looks like this:

Figure {SEQ Figure \* ARABIC}

After the slash and before the *, insert r#\ - where # is the number you
want to start the series with. If you want to change it to 138, for
example, it would look like this:

Figure {SEQ Figure \r138\* ARABIC}

Then right-click again and click Update Field.

Hope this helps. Too bad Word doesn't have a more convenient way to
initialize the number sequence for captions.
