Caption Menu in Insert Menu is incomplete

Dear all,
Here's something weird: If I want to insert a reference (caption), I can
onlu choose "caption", there's no sub-menu as it should. I can only insert a
caption which automatically has the label "table". This also has an impact on
creating a list of figures: I have to rename the label "table 1" to "figure
1", and choose the label "table" to insert a list of figures. To me it seems
that something is wrong with MS Office / Word. I have a licensed copy of MS
Office 2003. Updating it and/or choosing the "repair" option doesn't help /
solve the problem. Looking at "Help" on hopw to create a label, etc.
describes the proper things but the options are not available on the menu
"insert - reference - caption". What to do to solve this?

Thanks for advice / suggestions!

Danker

Graham, the links you supplied were not helpful. I don't have a problem with
a "crash of Word", it's just that the menu "Insert" - "reference" - "Caption"
doesn't have further options of choice for the caption (there's no further
sub menu (I use Word 2003). That's why I suspect there's something wrong with
the Office 2003 version I have. Is there any solution for that?

Did you do the various steps in Graham's instructions?

Even he has admitted that they don't have the best possible titles.

Attending to the issues in the links I provided should fix the problem,
which will almost vertainly be caused by a corrupt template, defective
add-in or a corrupt data key in the registry - all of which are covered in
those links. I posted the links for their content and not for their
filenames!
