Can't Work Outlook 2002 after a download from Microsoft

I downloaded automatic updates from Microsoft, which apparently activated a
copy of Office 2003 which was on the computer. I removed the Office 2003
package. This also affected Norton Internet Security which I have
temporarilty uninstalled. I can now open Microsoft Outlook 2002 (From the
Office XP pack), but I get the following error message. "unable to open your
default email folders. Could not open the item. Try Again." OK. "Would
you like to open your default file folder system instead?" YES. "Unable to
start processing services. Could not open the item. Try again?" OK. I am
then in a window that is MY Computer - Microsoft Outlook.

I think I have to do something with the .pst file, but I don't know what.

I really appreciate the help, thanks, mike

All items in Outlook are store in a "Personal Folders" file, or a PST. On
Windows 2000/XP systems, this file is kept in the (hidden) folder
%UserProfile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft Outlook. Enable
searching hidden files and folders and locate this file. Then open it in
Outlook with FIle>Open>Outlook Data File. If you see more than one, choose
the the most recent. It will probably contain your data. If it won't open,
choose the next older one. Once you get the most recent PST that opens, if
it appears to contain your data, make it the delivery location at the bottom
of Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next.

I only have My Computer, Microsoft Outlook. I do not have a choice to "open"
files under File.

You didn't read what I wrote. The File menu of which I speak is in Outlook.
You start Outlook and then on its menu bar, click File>Open. Follow the
rest of mu instructons.

Brian,

I apologize for not being clear. I can't open Microsoft Outlook at all.

When I try to open it the following things happen.

The first message is "unable to open your default email folder. Could not
open item. Try again."

I then click "OK".

the next error message is "Would you like to open your default file system
folder instead"

If I select "no" it shuts down the program. If I select "yes" I get the
following message.

"Debug Error. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office10\outlook.exe
abnormal program termination. Press retry to debug the application."

Whatever I press "Abort" "retry" or "ignore" closes the Outlook application
completely.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Microsof Office, but that does not work
either.

thanks, mike

Creating a new mail profile may help. Control Panel>Mail>Show Profiles>Add.
Point the new profile at your existing PST with the Data Files button.

Brian,

Thanks. I created a new profile, deleted the old one and then used the
information that you gave me in your first posting to open the folders. It
is working perfectly. Thank you very much for the help. mike
