Can't use Stand By

Dell recently worked on my Inspiron laptop, and I no longer have the Stand By option when I shut down the system. The Stand By icon is darkened and nonfunctional, so I have to leave the computer on all day or turn it off completely.

Dell has no ideas short of reloading Windows XP, but I was hoping for a less drastic remedy. Thanks.

This happened to me when I uninstalled a troublesome video drivers update. I
was then using Windows standard drivers. I reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers
and Standby returned.
