Hi All,

With Windows XP Pro, SP2, firewall on, I can not access FTP servers;
as soon as I turn the firewall off, I can access all the FTP servers I
need.

Can anyone help, PLEASE?

Open Windows Firewall and create and exception .At least File and Printer
Sharing must be checked so that you'll share all the files between the
networked computers.

Open Windows Firewall and create and exception.

I did. Opened up ports 20, 21, and 22.

At least File and Printer
Sharing must be checked so that you'll share all the files between the
networked computers.

That option is checked.

I still can't see any diference - either I turn off Windows XP Pro Sp2
firewall, or I simply have no FTP acess whatsoever. The second I turn
the firewall off, I have imediate FTP access.

Further sugestions, please?

TIA,
JBR

Have you had any luck yet? I am helping a friend with the exact same
problem. As soon as I turn off the firewall the ftp client works but the
Windows firewall isn't supposed to block outgoing traffic, just incoming.

No luck at all - whenever I need using FTP, I turn off the Win Xp Pro
firewall, hope the Norton 2005 antivirus does some protection of the
system - do my transfers, and then turn back on the Win Firewall.

Can't say I'm inpressed with Win Xp Pro Firewall.

Any suggestions of alternative firewalls?? Is the Norton a good one
(since I already have their antivirus)?

Just solved it: instaled Zone Alarm firewall software (available in a
free version), and disabled WinXpPro firewall.

Now it's working as it should!

I had this same issue, found that opening individual ports did not fix
the problem. I had to create exceptions for both the command-line
ftp.exe as well as my usual ftp app, WSFTP Pro 2006. Further, manually
adding the exception for WSFTP didn't work. I had to choose it from the
list of applications by clicking "Add Programs." Every now and then
FTPs will fail, and a reboot solves the issue. My guess is starting and
stopping the firewall service would do the same, but it hasn't failed in
a while, so I haven't had occasion to try it.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Margaret

Thanks Margaret, but now that it's working with Zone Alarm (free
version), I don't think I'll "waste" any more time on the subject.

I just wanted to share the experience with anyone else who could be
going through the same frustation.

(I presently have Norton Antivirus, valid up to July 2006; when the
time comes to update the subscription, I'll get firewall+antivirus
packet, probably from Zone Alarm.)

Hi Richard,

Have you had any luck yet? I am helping a friend with the exact same
problem. As soon as I turn off the firewall the ftp client works but the
Windows firewall isn't supposed to block outgoing traffic, just incoming.

Allow me to suggest the following:

Go to the Start menu, Settings, Network settings, right click your
connection, chose Properties, Networking, and make sure that files and
printers sharing in Microsoft networks is enabled.

If you're connected, disconnect and reconnect, and try using FTP now.
I suppose this is what worked for me; it's now working, with the
WinXpProSp2 firewall enabled.

Regards
