Can't upgrade older Windows XP Pro over newer Windows XP Home...

New system came with XP Home, however when I try to install an older CD of
XP Professional Upgrade, it says I can't because the Pro version is older
than the newer Home version.

Any suggestions?

Like to avoid going out and buying a new copy of Pro.

Also does a copy of windows need to be on the machine first? Or does it just
need to check the windows cd?

Any advice would be great..thanks.

It's because the computer is new and has sp2 install in it. You would have to
slipstream your xp pro cd with sp2 on it. Go here to
Http://unattended.msfn.org and go to beginning and do steps 1 and 2 and then
go to http://unattended.msfn.org/global/cdimage.htm
and follow the steps to download the 3 files and to make an new image cd and
burn it to a disc. it should work now.

With home copy on the machine xp wont require an older windows os cd.
However,i'd leave youre pro cd as is,first you cant upgrade home to pro,the
"upgrade" is for older windows os.Also,microsoft specifically states,you need
to do a clean installation if pro replaces home.With home on the
computer,boot
to xp cd,select install xp,new copy,delete the partition (home),create
one,then
xp formats and installs xp pro,solo.

You have SP2 installed, and your XP Professional Upgrade is
without it, so is an older version than what's installed.



You have two choices:

1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.



2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2, and use it. See

I can't uninstall SP2, at least it does not show up in the uninstall
programs list. This was a brand new copy of XP Home installed, which I
assume has SP2 and everything else built in.

As for creatings CDs and all that, like to avoid it.

How about loading an older OS? Ihave NT, 2000, 98, etc. Install that and
then upgrade to XP Pro?

I'd like to make this easy...I almost feel like just buying a new copy of XP
Pro..certainly would be quicker.

Any other suggestions??

Please stop giving wrong information about upgrading Home to Pro. It is a
viable upgrade path.
Please show me where MS specifically states,you need to do a clean
installation.
This problem was due to the version being older. Simply slipstream SP2 into
the old Pro and it will upgrade just fine.

No, an OS does not need to be installed to use the XP Pro upgrade. It
will ask for qualifying media. Insert the qualifying CD, then install
Xp Pro.

Your choice, but you said you want to make it easy. Creating a
slipstream CD *is* easy. Your suggestion would make it *much*

You've been told this before. The above is absolutely incorrect.
Upgrading from Home to Professional is not ony possible, it's the
easiest and most likely successful of all possible upgrades.

don't remember the commands...and well..I don't have a floppy now anyway

I can create a bootable CD...any ideas?

there...

slipstreamed version of XP Professional...I just think its a lot of work
that typical consumer should not have to do...and it is a lot of steps..plus
I sonic cd something and not nero..etc...

You don't need to erase the drive. Insert the upgrade CD, boot the
computer from the CD, insert the qualifying media when it says so,
remove any partitions, create new ones as part of the install and
install XP.
