Can't upgrade 98 to XP Computer freezes up

I just bought the XP Pro upgrade and tried to upgrade my
98. It goes so far then the screen goes completely black
and I get a 1" blue square with a pointer in it and that's
it. I waited over an hour for it to continue, then hard
booted the computer and told it to exit setup. What is
wrong?
