Can't Update Windows XP

I recently had to perform a system recovery which worked
fine , except now when Windows scans for lastest updates
I'm told the update software needs to be updated. When I
click th "Update Now" option it keeps repeating
the "Update Now" box but never actually updates. I tried
to do it manually but then i get a message saying my
browser settings are set to high, but they are set as
recommended. (I've also tried it with the XP firewall
turned off) Any suggestions please?????

Delete the contents of the system32\catroot2 dir and try again.
