Can't uninstall Norton, can't restore either

O

Old Geezer

I had installed Norton SystemWorks 2003 on my WinXP machine. My year of free
antivirus updates ran out, and since my DSL provider offers Computer
Associates EZAntivirus free, I decided to use that instead. I don't really
need the rest of SystemWorks anyway, since WinXP provides similar features
to most of what I used it for.

I went to Control Panel and uninstalled Norton, or so I thought. I restarted
the computer. But when I attempted to install EZAntivirus it warned that I
had Norton Antivirus on the machine and this should be uninstalled first.
Sure enough, Task Manager shows I have NAVAPSVC.EXE (which I presume is to
do with Norton Antivirus) loaded into memory, and other Norton stuff as well
such as Nprotect and GhostStartTray. Norton is completely gone from
Add/Remove Programs, but evidently is still there anyway and still loads on
startup.

None of the Norton programs will actually *run* but they evidently are still
there. And I don't want to install the other antivirus program because it
warns against doing so with Norton present. Doing an explore under Program
Files, all the Norton stuff appears to be still there, though useless of
course.

So I decided to run a System Restore, so I'd at least have some antivirus
stuff back. But System Restore wouldn't let me restore to an earlier time
today. I attempted to restore on yesterday's date (which was in bold on the
Restore calendar), and it spent some time trying to do so but then told me
it could not restore to that date. Trying to restore to the day before gave
the same result.

So now I'm stuck. I can't really uninstall Norton it seems, and neither can
I get it back working. I'd like to just get rid of it altogether as I
intended, so I can install the other antivirus program. I suspect that
System Restore is somehow the cause of my problem, i.e. that's what's
keeping me from actually getting rid of Norton.

Any help much appreciated.

norton is famous for leaving crap behind!
go to the norton web page and down load the removal tool
on the site.
it is some poorly written software that requires a separte
program to uninstall it!

Thanks to both of you gentlemen!

Now I've been to the Symantec site, downloaded the removal utility for when
uninstall fails, and also the instructions for complete manual uninstall
(ELVEN PAGES when saved as a Word document!) if the removal utility doesn't
work. So I should be all set.
