Nothing happens when I try to type in password I do not even get the '*****'
I am able to login to account that does not have a password and am able to
use the keyboard.

In the password request box, place you mouse pointer
in the box, click your keyboard ENTER key, a blinking
cursor should appear, then enter your password.

What kind of keyboard are you using? If USB try a PS/2 keyboard instead.
