Windows XP Home Unable to type Log In Password

In some instances i am unable to type my login password at the welcome
screen as there is no cursor available. The only way i can login is to login
to another account that has no password and then log out again. Then i can
normally get the cursor back and login normally. This happens usually when
another user has logged out and i then try to login to my account. Any ideas
Please as it is getting very frustrating.

This fix worked for me.

Courtesy of Ramesh Srinivasan, MS-MVP
Go to Start -> Run and enter the following command in the Open
box.

regsvr32 shgina.dll

Click OK.
Log off and see if you can now enter your password.

Good luck

Sorry to hear that didn't help.

Until you find a solution you might want to try hitting the
Ctrl + Alt + Del keys when the Welcome Screen is displayed.
That should display the Logon to Windows dialog. Hopefully, you
can enter your user name and password there. At least that way
you won't have to logon to another account first.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to see if the same
behavior exists with another password protected user account?
Also, if this problem only appeared recently, have you tried
using System Restore to take your computer back to a time
before the problem started. It's possible that a recently
installed program or update may be the source of this problem.

Good luck

We are unable to login to any password protected account. it has been
happening on and off for a couple of months now. it may only happen 1 in 10
times but there still must be a reason for it. hopefully someone has a
solution. i have also checked the MS Knowledge base without any success.

Hi Folks,

I have been having this problem with XP Home for several months (less than a
year). I believe that it may have started with a Windows Update, either for
Windows, or for MS Office 2003. Does anyone else experiencing this problem
have Office 2003 installed?

I have tried several things, including removing updates, but I will not
uninstall Office as it is critical to my work.

This is happening on a laptop, and there have been no hardware changes since
I bought the thing. It's not the keyboard, or the mouse. I doubt it has to
do with Services or drivers. And ctrl-alt-del twice does bring up the login
dialog on Home, not just Pro.

One thing I noticed is that, if the first user to log on after a restart is
a limited user, then nothing is affected. It appears to be a problem only
after an administrator has logged on.

I tried someone's suggestion of re-registering the Windows Shell User Logon
(regsvr32 shgina.dll), and this seemed to work for a couple of days, but then
the problem came back.

I've been on 'expert' forums, but everyone has the same useless suggestions.
So I thought I'd try Microsoft, but this forum is the only one I found where
the problem is being discussed.

Do Microsoft developers ever check these forums? If so, you'd think someone
would say something to the effect that either there is a solution, or the
problem is known, but there's no solution yet.

This is a peer to peer newsgroup. All the participants are volunteers.
Occasionally an MS employee will post here, but on their own time, and not
as part of MS support. So if you want to communicate with MS you need to do
so through one of the established channels.

Well Rock, as I stated, I've tried to find answers in several places,
including the Microsoft Knowledgebase, other Windows newsgroups, and MSDN to
no avail. It's almost like Microsoft doesn't know about this problem. I was
going to send an email support request, but for me it will cost $59, so it's
not worth it. There is a workaround so it's not that important - just an
inconvenience for other users of this computer.

Do you have any useful info on this, other than what type of newsgroup this
is? I have provided information that no-one else has mentioned.

Anyone else having this problem using Office 2003 Pro?
Anyone else notice that it seems to only occur after logging in to an admin
account?

If I knew of a resolution I would have posted it. Several others have
posted with this problem over the past months, but no definitive solution.
I don't know if they Office 2003 Pro was a common denominator or not. Not
sure about the admin account login triggering it.

You asked several questions, one of which "Do Microsoft developers ever
check these forums?". I was trying to help you out by explaining that they
didn't and why.

If you want help from MS then you'll have to pay the support costs. There
are some feedback mechanisms, I'll supply a couple of links, but whether
that will get a response, I don't know.
