Hi all...
trying to download the latest security bulletin from Microsoft, and found
what i thought was my firewall being on, is now not!
error message received as follows:

Network Connections
an error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled the
dependency service or group failed to start.

end of error message

I am not on a network, impendent , did just recently move this computer to
another location , running Comcast cable, noticed that another error message
(sorry) forgot to write the whole thing down, but something as to IP address
could not be verified?.... can surf the net, receive and send email... run
virus scans every day, running Zone Alarm Pro, AVG Pro , and Sophos
Antiv-Virus. Please help , feel really vulnerable knowing built in
firewall...intrinsic as it may be is not turned on.

Thanks in advance

Start Application Layer Gateway
via
Control Panel->Administrative Services->Services

funny name for a firewall.

You do not need to have the xp firewall on if you have zone alarm pro. A
firewall is a firewall, you don't need two running and it could actually
cause problems running two. Same with anti-virus program, choose one and
stick with it. There is no need to run two anti-virus program and this can
also cause problems.

Very good advise from purple, use Zone alarm only, it's much better and
don't turn on XP's, they probably will conflict.

wow.,.. don't know exactly what i said that was so "funny" but glad someone
got some humor on this Veterans Day...pure idiot here , if that makes you
feel any better, but did follow the instructions below, though i can not
reach <Start Application Layer Gateway > through the Control
Panel->Administrative Services- but was able to find it after much searching
and still can not enable the firewall in windows xp, will just suffice to
the other's response and feel i don't need two firewalls, and so many
anti-virus, but have always only followed this newsgroups advice before with
great results. was told by one of the MVP's which firewalls and anti-virus
that they ran, and only did the same, so as to not appear more ignorant than
i all ready am, all I was asking is why all of a sudden, (cant recall adding
any new programs, can't remember changing configuration of this machine, why
is it that I can no longer enable my firewall within XP. And what may if i
dare ask, for the sake of being banned from the newsgroup which i find of
the most respectful and wonderful help in all my little years of computing,
was so funny about my question. No ! I don't have thin skin...so CAP LETTER
me away, I survived two tours in Nam, think I can handle a little
constructive criticisms here...only want to keep my computer safe as I
depend on it for my main source of income.

maybe Kelly or Bruce could chime in on this one, so I can not dig myself in
any deeper :)

Greetings --

If you're already using ZoneAlarm, there's no need to enable
WinXP's rather rudimentary built-in firewall. In fact, have two
firewalls running simultaneously can sometimes cause problems.

On a similar note, I hope that both of your anti-virus
applications aren't running simultaneously, as this can also cause
problems.
