Can't turn off computer

I had windows 98 operation system earlier.
I have set up windows xp for some month and my computer can not turn itself
off since then.
I choose shut down - as earlier - I hear a "click" from the machine - as
earlier - but the computer does not turn itself off.
What can be the problem?

I can only turn it off by holding the "turn on" button for some seconds.
I'm afraid of that can cause damage in my computer in the long run. Is that
true?

I had to Enable Advanced Power Management Support.
That was the problem.
