Can't Surf

Running XP Home. Connection to Internet via cable modem. Modem connected to
Internet fine (verified with ISP); computer retrieves valid IP, but will not
connect to any server/web page via IE, Netscape, Firefox or other
applications. Uninstalled SP2- no change; disabled or uninstalled
firewalls/anti-virus- no change, then did complete XP system restore
(emachine susyems disks), still no change. Computer will surf/connect via
dial-up (AOL) but not via NIC or USB from cable modem.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you running the latest version of ZoneAlarm as a firewall? ZA has a
problem which runs the gamete from not being able to connect to the internet
or disconnecting the internet after a period of time.

I was running ZA when the problem started. I tried disabling, but still no
connection.

as to: DNS servers or proxy servers set / not set perhaps? I am not sure
what that means.
