Installed SP2 last week and since then have been bombared with little Error
Message windows.

There were a few settings that needed adjusting, which I've seen to.

Now, I still get 'em in waves of 20 or 30 each time.

And there is no record of a problem in eventvwr.msc.

Any ideas/hints?

Desperately,

Shawn

Might help if you let us all in on what the error messages are saying ...

Details, details....:-)

The messages read some variation of

"ERROR 008B423F The service cannot accept control messages at this time: $"

Sometimes the first letters/numbers of the code are different, but they
always end in 423F. And I'm getting them CONSTANTLY.

thx

Reformat and clean install.

I could buy a new computer, too...

Hoping for something short of this sort of overhaul, thanks.

A new computer is more expensive and when you consider the time you've spent
posting this problem all over the Internet, you could have reformatted three
computers ...

And not have learned anything about what caused the problem in the first
place. I'm hoping someone will be clueful about this one and we'll all
learn something.

But I meet such charming, helpful people this way.

I have posted this problem only on a Microsoft help board -- twice. Last
week I had a *different* problem and asked about it -- twice (once by
accident, which I apologized for almost instantly).

Perhaps I should have posted as well on alt.computers.angry-anonymous-troll
and saved you the trouble of surfing over here to harass me....

Thanks for all your "advice"....

Any error messages in the event logs? Use Event Manager to display these.

Hopefully there will be some entries that tell you what program/service is
involved.

Recently installed Firefox after years of using Netscape. Not partial to IE.

I'm not familiar with Event Manager. I have been running eventvwr.msc, if
that's the same thing, and find nothing irregular anywhere within.

OK the reason I asked is because when I googled "The service cannot accept
control messages at this time" I found a few people mentioned Firefox in the
same breath..

Example thread with similar error code xxxx423F but no solution either...

and again (skip the advert then scroll down)...

Quote: now there is an Error message it says ERROR 013B423F: The service
cannot accept control messages at this time: $

Not sure if this helps but perhaps try IE for a while to see if you also get
it with IE?

When I replied to that post, there were obvious errors in event viewer that I
rectifited. But now the problem persists. I *do* think it may be sensitive
to Firefox: I can sometimes eliminate it entirely only to find it kicking in
again when I click on a Firefox window. I'll test for a while and report
back...

thx

Shawn

Thanks for the tip.

I updated Java and reinstalled. The problem still occurs with Firefox.

HOWEVER: no problem with Netscape.

So I'm using Netscape and bugging the people on the Firefox board for advice.

If I get any information there, I'll post here.

Thanks again to the board for all the help!

best,

Shawn

I, too, keep getting an error message pop up that I cannot get rid of. It is
"PrintServer connect fail". I run XP, and got this message when I had not
started my remote printer. Afterwards, I started the printer, printed many
messages, but continur to get this pop-up.

Any thoughts?
