Can't start Safe Mode

I have a Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2) computer, I got it
this year late January. I can't go into Safe Mode, for as long as I
have tried to start the computer through Safe Mode. Whenever I start
it, it starts loading the file names list down the screen, but then
after than it goes to a black screen. On the corners of the screen is
written Safe Mode, and at the very top it just has written Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition (and what pack and build it is), and all I can
do is move the mouse. Other than that I can't see the start up, or do
anything else. Can somebody help?
