Can't share 'My Documents' on network

M

Marco

Greetings,
My roomates and I have a small network, 2 pc's and a
laptop. All are running a version of XP (2 XP Home & 1 XP
Pro). We all have our music in our 'My Music' folder
in 'My Documents'.
We've tried sharing the folder by right clicking and
selecting 'share this folder on the network' but we still
can't seem to access eachothers folders over the network.
Any ideas?

Since no one else is talking to you, I'll try. A quick
fix should be to put your music in the SharedMusic folder
under Shared Documents on each of your machines.
To try to go beyond that, if you haven't already, maybe
you have to deselect simple file sharing in Tools menu /
Folder Options View tab. Then, when you right-click on
the file/folder, do you get a Sharing & Security choice?
If so, more detailed control is available to you. On the
sharing tab, in addition to checking the Share option, you
can go on to specify the permissions available to users
when they try to access the file. See what default you
have there. Then go to the Security tab. Here I honestly
don't know the right thing to do but trial & error
suggests that if you give the group Everyone permission to
access the file/folder, then network sharing works.

Disabled Internet Connection Firewall if it is enabled on the machines. If you are using other firewall software, disable or uninstall it temporarily. Then try accessing the files again. You may need to open up file sharing ports on your machine: TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445. Hope that helps a bit.

Side note: You need SFS (Simple File Sharing) enabled in order to access files on the other machines.
