The discussion here is getting me more confused
by the minute. XP is entirely new to me, so the
notion of guests is totally foreign to me. Also, I've
never had the need for passwords on a home LAN,
so that's all new to me as well.

So, I don't know how to follow either "KG"'s or
Davetest's suggestions regarding either of the two
ideas regarding guests and/or passwords.

Can we discuss an aside here while I get these two
XP features better understood? I.e., do I create a
guest? Just flip on some option to enable guests?
where do I find the "handles" for these features?

By-the-way, I did go to www.practicallynetworked.com,
but didn't find anything about file and printer sharing. (Great
discussion about ICS though)

Thanks,
Bill
go to control panel/administrative/computer management/local users and tools/
users.
Right click the guest account to view info. "account is disabled" should *not*
be selected.

good luck -

Doesn't the "no password" option work as long as you keep the
"guest" account active?
Dave

If you enable the guest account, XP will use it to authenticate the
"visiting" user. You don't always get the amount of access that you
would like to have with this method. The alternative is to assign
passwords.

There are setting in group policy and local policy that allow network
logon/access without passwords but it is not very safe nor is it
recommended.

Sharon,
The only firewall I'm aware of on my machine is
Norton Internet Security 2003, which is installed
on both machines. If there's another, where would
I look to find out?
Bill

Sorry, I don't know where the settings are with Norton's firewall as I've
never used it. If XP's Internet Connection Firewall is active, you can
disable it by right clicking on a network connection, select properties.
On the last page, uncheck the box to protect connection with the
firewall. Or check it to add that protection.

The network wizard likes to add this on to *all* connections so it's not
uncommon to have to remove it from the LAN connection. Not a good
move on the wizard's part. If a firewall is active on the internal network
(you want it in place for the internet!), it can block network activity
between the workstations.

Installed IPX/SPX/NETBIOS Compatible
Protocol on both the host and client
machines... BINGO!

Then, all I had to do to get the printer
to work from the client was to let the
wizard "browse the network" as I
"added a printer" to the client...
BINGO again!

A rhetorical question: Why in God's name
didn't Windows XP install the needed
protocols when I specified that the
hard-drives and printer were to be
shared? Or at least tell me that the
NetBIOS protocol is needed if they are
are to be shared... SIGH!
