can't share a USB printer - why?

WinXP machine (on a novell network). We need to share a USB printer on this
machine so we can redirect a LPT port to the printer. But when we try to
share the printer, giving it a sharename, the config will not 'stick' -
after saving, going back to the printer config shows that it still isn't
shared. The printer is working fine under Window apps.

Anyone have any ideas why windows is refusing to share this printer??

thanks.

The printer drivers have to be installed on each computer that wishes to
access the printer for use.

You have to use M$ Network sharing, not Novell sharing as supplied by
M$. M$'s implementation of Novell network services is a
reverse-engineered, recomplied, piece of crap.

There is only ONE computer in question. We are not 'sharing' the printer so
another machine can use it, but so we can redirect the LPT2 port on the same
machine to the USB printer, using 'net use...' command.

You mean, when we go to the printer's properties dialog and try to share it,
we're really using Novell sharing as supplied by MS?? Do we even have MS
Network sharing? If so, how would we share the printer using it instead of
the 'Novell sharing' you refer to? Or are we screwed?

network components and how are they being used?
