Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it may be causing the problem, and even Symantec says
it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Ive tried to do this but its not obvious 'how to' ? Ive got Norton and cant
see it in there or on the email page?

Out of interest why would this suddenly cause a problem after running fine
for 2 years?

Thanks for your help

I followed the instructions and have now closed down email scanning, shut
down and restarted the computer but the same message appears when I try to
send and recieve or sync?

Any other help you can offer?

The account may now be corrupted?
Remove it after noting all the settings from each tab at tools
accounts>select the account>properties.
Close and reopen WM and rebuild the account.

Tell me please about "lyonline.co.uk" I can find no info whatsoever about
it.

Are you checking this account at home or away?
Are you using the same ISP as when the account previously worked?

lyonline is actually 'online.co.uk' the LY bit was added by us and stands for
my wifes company name, 'Legally Yours'. - Jo @ LY online.co.uk

Im checking it from home and operating everything as we've always done?

I'll try your suggestion and let you know...

thanks again

Surely you can't change the Server name to suit yourself?

Go to the server tab of the account and remove the LY from the Server names

I tried the 'remove and rebuild' option but no change, same message appears?

re the address, we bought it a while ago and set up various email addresses
all of which ended @lyonline.co.uk (Ive now deleted the other account so the
only one is the one my wife ha printed on her business cards?

Dont know what to do now?

When I say we added it, thats actually how the account was set up nearly 2
years ago and its always operated that way, As you can tell I wouldnt have
been bright enough to fiddle with those type of settings at any time without
expert guidance?

Ive literally (as im typing this!) just found some old paperwork which says
we bought the domain name 'lyonline.co.uk' does that help?

Yes, the domain lyonline.co.uk definitely exists, or I wouldn't have bothered
connecting to the server with telnet. So, the mail server wasn't responding
because the web hosting bill was in arrears...
