can't send messages

Since installing XP service pack 2, I sporadically, and ever more frequently,
receive the following message from Sending and Receiving: Sending and
Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC65) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server
has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message,
contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The
server responded: ? 503 valid RCPT command must precede DATA'. My emails are
stuck in the Outbox. This is the 2nd time this happens in the past 2 weeks,
and I don't know what to do. My hosting service says it's a problem with my
ISP, but I know it is not because I can send emails with AOL.

Any ideas?

Do you have any type of internet security product installed that can scan
both inbound and outbound e-mail? (MS/MVPs are seeing a high rate of
reports of antivirus, antispam, and personal firewalls that scan e-mail
cause really weird issues over the last few weeks. If possible, see if you
can uninstall/reinstall that security product w/out e-mail integration.)

Yes, I have McAffee and have been having problems with the virus scan
V-shield not loading at start up, and when I try to load it manually, it
becomes active, then disables itself. I keep it up to date with updates, but
this also started happening right after I installed service pack 2. I'm
going to try your suggestion of deinstalling McAffee. I also have Adware,
which I think I'm going to deinstall permanently because it annoys me with
its pop-up blocking messages.

Thank you so much, this is very helpful. What perplexes me most is the fact
that this problem is intermitent, it has happened twice and then it goes away
for a few days.

Ad-Aware doesn't have any pop-up blocking messages.

In addition to your a/v program, you might check to see if the Windows
firewall is interfering, since XP SP2 enables the firewall by default, which
may be different than you had before.
