Can't send mail...can't delete from outbox

I can no longer send emails. I hit send and they go to my outbox but never go
to sent. When i click send and receive, it seems to work - receiving mail but
nothing sends. I have one email in my outbox that gives me an error when I
open or try to delete 'an unknown error has occurred.' Any ideas? Thanks!!!!!
