Can't Send in Outlook 2007 - SSL

My email account is setup as IMAP with Outlook 2007 B2TR with Vista RC1. I
had successfully used the same settings with the following combinations:
Office 2003 + XP Pro
Office 2007 B2 + XP Pro
Office 2007 B2TR + XP Pro
I have now installed Vista RC1 (build 5600) on a new partition of the hard
drive. It works great. On a different partition is XP Pro with Office 2007
B2TR and everything works great there, including sending in Outlook. I
receive email fine in Vista, but cannot send anything. My settings are as
follows:
Incoming mail: Port 993, SSL
Outgoing mail: Port 25, SSL
These are the settings prescribed by my "ISP", the University of Wisconsin.
They also reccommend trying ports 465 and 587 which I have tried to no avail.
Any thoughts?

You should try replacing your server's name with its IP address. If you
don't know the IP address, type cmd into Vista's search box and in the
window that opens type ping followed by the name. that should give you
some numbers with dots inbetween. That's the IP address that you want to
use instead of the name in the Outlook account configuration.

Let us know if this works.

I entered that number in place of the outgoing server's name in the account
settings. Unfortunately, I still cannot send messages and I get the same
error message as decribed earlier. Thank you very much for the help so far!

When you pinged it from Vista, did you get a reply from the mail server?
Did you verify that your mail server doesn't require authentication or
SPA?
What happens if you switch off SSL and try then? If it doesn't work,
what if you chose TLS next? And if that doesn't work, back to SSL?

When I pinged earlier, it was from Vista. I haven't tired pinging from XP
yet (need to restart, of course). I do get 4 successful replies when I ping
from Vista. The mail server does not require SPA, though I haven't tried
that yet. I have tried all the settings with each port. In other words, I
have tried Auto, SSL, TLS, None with all three ports: 25, 465, and 587 to no
avail.

When you pinged it from Vista, did you get a reply from the mail server?
Did you verify that your mail server doesn't require authentication or
SPA?
What happens if you switch off SSL and try then? If it doesn't work,
what if you chose TLS next? And if that doesn't work, back to SSL?

Try SPA and see if it works with it.
Also, look into the authentication settings.

And I was asking about a ping from Vista. There have been some issues
connecting to a mail server from Vista with Outlook 2007 before.

I have tried all encryption types/port combinations with and without SPA and
none works - all give the same error message as before when sending. My
apologies, but I am unsure of what you mean by "authentication settings".

In the meantime, I uninstalled the entire Office 2007 B2TR (and thus all
traces of Office) from my Vista setup and reinstalled the entire B2. No luck
with Outlook in all possible setting combinations that we've discussed. I
then put the B2TR on top of that and of course, no luck there. I uninstalled
the whole thing again and this time reinstalled everything except Outlook.
Then I installed the B2TR. The plan is to try putting Outlook 2003 back on
(gotta find the product key first) and see if that solves it. I guess this
problem seems to be a Vista issue and not an Outlook issue, at least from my
limited perspective.

Try SPA and see if it works with it.
Also, look into the authentication settings.

And I was asking about a ping from Vista. There have been some issues

In Tools, Account Settings, click change on your account, then more
Settings. There is an Outgoing Server" tab. Check the box and play
around with SMTP authentication.

I found the IP address by pinging the outgoing mail server as you described.
I entered that number in place of the outgoing server's name in the account
settings. Unfortunately, I still cannot send messages and I get the same
error message as decribed earlier. Thank you very much for the help so far!

You should try replacing your server's name with its IP address. If you
don't know the IP address, type cmd into Vista's search box and in the
window that opens type ping followed by the name. that should give you
some numbers with dots inbetween. That's the IP address that you want to
use instead of the name in the Outlook account configuration.

Let us know if this works.

Yes, my apologies for not including it earlier. Here is the message:

'Acct name - sending' reported error(0x80042109): 'Outlook cannot connect
to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this
message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider
(ISP).'

Acct name being my actual account name, of course.

My email account is setup as IMAP with Outlook 2007 B2TR with Vista RC1. I
had successfully used the same settings with the following combinations:
Office 2003 + XP Pro
Office 2007 B2 + XP Pro
Office 2007 B2TR + XP Pro
I have now installed Vista RC1 (build 5600) on a new partition of the hard
drive. It works great. On a different partition is XP Pro with Office 2007
B2TR and everything works great there, including sending in Outlook. I
receive email fine in Vista, but cannot send anything. My settings are as
follows:
Incoming mail: Port 993, SSL
Outgoing mail: Port 25, SSL
These are the settings prescribed by my "ISP", the University of Wisconsin.
They also reccommend trying ports 465 and 587 which I have tried to no avail.
Any thoughts?
