Cant send faxes from lucent winmodem

I have a HP 873N and I cannot send faxes. I am able to set
up a dialup internet connection with this modem and I can
recieve faxes, but the fax console doesn't recognize that
the modem is installed.

When I go to configure the fax modem, it seems to install
the winmodem, but the faxes never get sent (line not
available).

The internet dial up proerties indicate that the winmodem
is using COM3, but in the fax config modem screens, it only
offers COM1.

Any advice?

Thanks,

davem

WinXP fax is apparently very picky about which modems it actually will
work with. You have to check the hardware compaitiblity list
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx?gssnb=1 for modems which
are "designed for WindowsXP." As near as I can tell with a quick look,
there are only 3 Lucent modems on this list (which may or may not be
your model), all of which are only "compatible with WindowsXP," so you
may be out of luck. How old is your modem?

First check if your modem is on the Hardware Compatibility List. You can
find this at :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...ryl2&pgn=01a642fd-2790-420f-90bd-85df6a377206

Then, check your phone line. You can do so using -
Start Menu ->Programs -> Accessories -> Communication ->Hyperterminal.

See if you are able to successfully dial a number using your modem.
Also, make sure you have enabled the device for sending.(this is enabled by
default, but do check nevertheless). You can do this from the Fax Printer
Configuration menu in Fax Console and clicking on the Modem's properties.

Why are you still using such unhandy thing as Hyper Terminal? Recently
I've found an interesting program - Flash Terminal. It is really Hyper
Terminal killer. With Flash Terminal you can chat and exchange files
via modem (including v.90, ISDN, ADSL, GPRS) and null-modem
simultaneously without Internet! You can exchange up to 255 files at
once with unlimited transfer resuming after connection break. Program
includes large amount of nice avatars.
