CAN'T SEND FAX FROM VISTA- get RPC SERVER NOT AVAILABLE

It appears my Agere WinFax Modem is installed correctly in my VISTA 64
Ultimate installation (new installation, new PC) - when I configured Windows
faxing, the modem showed up in my FAX ACCOUNT as "local fax (default)"

I wrote a test fax to send to my office. When I clicked SEND I get an error
"The message could not be sent. The RPC server is not available."

In days of old, RPC server errors were usually funky permissions errors, but
I'd never seen one on a FAX....

Any suggestions? I tried uninstalling / reinstalling the fax modem, etc
etc. I am using the driver that Windows installed, so it's got to be WHQL
right??

Any ideas, anyone?

(Note, this is a dual boot machine and this Fax works in Windows XP)

Print Spooler in SERVICES snap-in shows STARTED; in VISTA TASK MANAGER the
service SPOOLER shows RUNNING (PID 1356.) Printing to my Cannon USB ink
jet printer works fine.

In the PRINTERS window, FAX shows as READY. When I click SEND on a fax
I've written, I get the "RPC Server Not Available" error.

Modem Diagnostics in Control Panel works fine.
