Can't Send Emails

With regard to those dial-up pop-ups:
In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections.
The box under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" should be
blank, and "Never dial a connection" should be selected but grayed out.

Next, in Windows Mail go to Tools, Accounts, select your mail account,
Properties, Connection. What does it show for connection?
You must either leave that unselected (in which case WM will use whatever
connection IE uses), or else select the Local Area Network.

Then, go to Tools, Options, Connection, the first box should be checked,
and the second box unchecked.

If all that checks out, but you still have the dial-up pop-ups, the account
may be corrupted.
Delete the account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

Thanks so much Gary,
I ended up deleting & recreating the account. I sent a test and received
it...only after doing 'send & receive all'. Is there a way to avoid having to
do that? With outlook express...emails just appeared automatically in my
'inbox'.

Tools menu>General tab, check for new messages every ##, set this no lower
than 5 minutes or your ISP might react adversely?

Also ensure that the check box is checked to include your account when
receive or sync, @ tools>accounts>select your account>properties>general
tab.

I can't send emails and am still receiving email. Error message as follows:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)]'.
Subject 'Fw: National Squad', Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server:
'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 Invalid address
syntax', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number:
0x800CCC79

I also had this problem. When my ISP finally got around to answering my
email, they said they had made changes to their outgoing server. All I had
to do was delete one letter from my outgoing server setting and that fixed
the problem.
