Since the problem is now occurring on three computers, don't even
bother with Thunderbird. It almost definitely is an outside-caused issue,
probably your ISP. To test that theory, you can get a free Gmail account
(go to http://gmail.com ), configure it for POP access:

Then set that account up in Windows Mail:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86383
Since it uses a different SMTP server, that will prove whether or not
the culprit is your ISP's SMTP server.
