can't seem to log into XP

the prob is:
1. now when i start the pc usually it goes to the blue page with all the
users to enter the password to log in.
but now the prob i face is that each time i start the pc, it goes to a pop
up login (something like the windows 2000 log in screen). but i can't log in,
it say error. i can only shut it down.

has my system crashed? can you help me on this? there's important datas in
my pc which formating would be the last resort.
