Can't see USB hard drive

Today I am not able to detect or "see" an external USB hard drive that I
occasionally attach to my notebook. I can't find it in my network places.
In My Computer Magage- Device manager I show a mass storeage device in the
USB group but not in removeable storage or Disk management. When I remove
the driver in the device manager USB Mass storeage device XP sees a new mass
storeage device and reinstalles the drivers. This is saying to me that my
system knows it's there. Why cant I address or 'see' it. Am running XP PRO
with SP2.
