First 'my computer' device manager show's no hardware? Also, I can seem to
access my usb scanner. When setting up the workgroup the printers
automatically shared but not the scanner. I can seem to figure out how to
get the scanner software to see the scanner. Help?

Not all scanners support network access. What make and model is yours?

That didn't answer my question. My scanner owrked just fine before I set up a
workgroup(home network).

I tried that. When I start the software that came with the scanner is says
that it doesn't see the scanner. It worked fine before.

Microtek 5800 running scanwizard 5 - the other thing that is interesting is
my device manager is empty.

I called Dell and this is how they walked me through to fix this. I went to
tinyurl.com/765b8 and downloaded a program called 'aproposfix' and run the
batch file in safe mode under my account name - not the administrator - once
I ran the batcfh program in safe mode I restarted my computer in Normal Mode.
Sure enough Device Manager was populated and the scanner works. Please
share the word.

As you found out...when running into driver issues on "Branded" systems,
like Dell, Gateway,HP; it is always expedient to check the vendor web site
first. You are paying for support along with the product, might as well make
use of it. Plus, often they will make adjustments to the optimize their
systems that won't allow them to respond to more generic solutions which
work perfectly well with computers assembled using off the shelf components.
