Sharing a Scanner

C

Chris Mahoney

Hi

I just bought one of those combo scanner/printers (an Epson Stylus CX3100,
connected via USB), and I've successfully shared the printer over the
network. Is it possible to share the scanner too? I'd like to be able to
scan from any computer, not just the one that the scanner's connected to. If
it is possible, how can I do it? This is my first scanner so I don't even
know where to start looking!

Thanks
Chris

Hi

Does this help http://snipurl.com/2jak I haven't tried it myself but
someone posted in a newsgroup recently that it works OK.

Duh, it would have helped if I'd posted the correct type of 'scanner' link.
Sorry about that. I did have a link for some software that allowed a
scanner to be shared but I can't find it ATM. In my haste to answer I
posted the wrong link. I'll have a look again and see if I can find the
*correct* one for you later today, many apologies for the mistake.

Found it quicker than I expected. This http://www.remote-scan.com/ *is* the
one I meant to post, honest. ;-)

Thanks, but do you know of anything that doesn't require special client
software? I didn't want to overcomplicate my original question, but I'm not
running Windows on all the computers, and therefore can't use anything
Windows-specific.

With the printer, I can just right-click it and go to Sharing. Can't you do
this with a scanner?

Thanks
Chris

PS. That first post is still useful, I've been looking for something like
that :)

Hi Chris,
Nope, there's nothing generic in windows that lets you share a scanner
across a network. I can't answer for other operating systems.

Hi

No, there's nothing that I know of. The only scanners that have networking
abilities, that I know of, are high-end products and some of the Umax
scanners. You can't share a scanner like a printer I'm afraid, not in
Windows.

In my experience this is a function of the scan software>>.check with
Epson..... UMAX scanners have a "scan server" as part of the scan software
that allows the PC the scanner is physically hooked to, to share the scanner
with other PC's in the workgroup. Epson might have something similar.

No this is not possible with this product.
To access a scanner you need a scanner that is supported as a network
resource, that means that the vendors has written and supports
software that will allow the scanner to be shared on the network and
has written a GUI so you can access and control that source from a
remote computer.

Well, thanks everyone for your help, even though it didn't solve my problem.
I asked the same question elsewhere and basically got the same answers, so
it looks like it can't be done :(
