Can't see machines on network

I have two machines runnung XP. They are connected to the internet thru a
hub. Both machines can connect to the intenet and each machine can ping each
other but ONLY if my ADSL connection is pugged in. Neither machine can see
the other on the network. Each machine has a unique name and they are both
part of the same workgroup. Any ideas?
