I can't see my CD writer in Explorer. The tray opens and
closes but nothing happens if I put a CD in. I have
tried editing the reg file by removing lower filter value
(there was no upper filter value) as recommended in
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 314060, but this
didn't fix it. I have tried a system restore and have
also tried disconnecting the drive and reconnecting it to
see whether the computer would recognise it. None of
this has worked. Has anyone got any ideas please?

Hi Geoff,

Is it seen in Device Manager?
How about the IDE channel it is on, is that controller ok?
Is it detected by the system BIOS?

Rick,

Your questions are over my head I'm afraid. How do I

Basically, in Device Manager does the ide controller cable that the drive is
attached to show? And does it show with an error?

The system BIOS (basic input/output system) is accessed before Windows
begins to load. Basically, it is responsible for detecting and enumerating
the hardware attached to the system, then passes this on to the Operating
System (WindowsXP in this case). Windows will not see it if the BIOS does
not.

This page from MVP Michael Stevens covers how to enter the BIOS on many
different systems:

Geoff, remove any 3rd party burning software you have installed. Then
run this little utility from Alex Nichol. You'll have to reinstall the
software.
