Can't save to Normal.DOT...?

Kenneth

Howdy,

I have recorded a macro in Word 2000. It appears in the
macro list.

If I then close Word, I get the error: "The file
(Normal.dot) is in use by another application or user."

I have checked with care:

There is nothing other than Word running, and the system is
not on the network.

What might be preventing me from altering Normal.dot?

Thanks for any help with this,

I get this every once in a while. Not so often any more
however since the latest updates. I think the culprit is
Outlook Express but I'm not sure. In any event, the
work-around is simple. Save the template with another name.
I use "newnormal.dot". Then exit Word and navigate to the
folder where the templates are. Rename normal.dot to
"oldnormal.dot" and newnormal.dot to "normal.dot".

Hi Bob,

Your suggestion seems most reasonable, but I have tried it
many times.

When I attempt to re-name my "newNormal.DOT, I get the error
that I cannot because Normal.DOT is in use.

All the best,

If you have Word as your Outlook editor, you will need to close Outlook also
to free normal.dot.

Check also that you only have one copy of normal.dot

Hi again Graham,

Now, I am having another problem, and it is rather
strange...

When I attempt to close Word (and save the modified
Normal.DOT) I now get a memory error telling me that a
specific address cannot be "read."

The odd part is that last night I ran a memory checking
utility for about 8 hours and it finds no problem.

Thanks for any further help you might provide,

Hi Graham,

I do use Outlook, but have been careful to shut down
anything that is running other than Word.

Exit ALL programs (including any antivirus software) and try
renaming.

If you still can't. Boot up in safe mode and try renaming.
