Can't save message as an outlook template

I am trying to set up auto-reply on my email because I am going on vacation.
I cannot use the OUT OF OFFICE assistant because I use a POP account. The
instructions say to start an email, click SAVE AS, and save it as an OUTLOOK
TEMPLATE. My outlook is not offering that option - only a DOCUMENT TEMPLATE
and that does not work. HELP!!!!
 
You cannot use Word as the editor and have the template creation work. You
must use the native Outlook message editor.
