I have a shared directory mapped as my X drive on my XP pro computer and it
is accessible thru windows explorer on both of my computers as the X drive.

I cannot however save any files from programs on either of my computers to
this drive. I get the warning "You do not have permission to save in this
directory. See the administrator"
the directory needs to be mapped for the purpose of network 3d rendering,
but it is no good if neither computer can save rendered output to this
location.

anyone know?
thanks

It is a problem the way you set it up permission. I think you have read only.
To change the permission first, click on MY COMPUTER, Click on folder
options>>click on view>> Uncheck SIMPLE FILE SHARING.
Then right click on your drive X. Then go to sharing and security>> Go to
security tab. Click EVERYONE. Then click Full control (If you do not want to
give permission to delete things in the share by others, just give read write
permissions. Then click okay.

CHAMI...
