Can't SAVE files to Folders from EXCEL (and WORD)

I can't save files to existing folders... can't even do a "save as"... the
EXCEL 2003 Program gets to a "Not Responding" state and I have to crash it.
I was able to save a file to the "My Documents" folder. The same thing
happened to my Word Program. This all happened after I did the latest
security update to the XP program. I "removed" and then reinstalled the
Office 2003 program but the problem still exists.

Hi David:

You can remove the offending update from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows
as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates"
box at the top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Doesn't this exposure you to security problems. And also, could this cause
additional problems? Why can't Microsoft fix this.

It doesn't expose you to any more security problems than you had the
minute/day/month/year before you installed the update.

I had the very same problem - after a day and a half of trying to figure out
what was wrong I stumbled onto this forum. I tried the fix suggested and now
Word and Excel save to folders. Thanks for the help - but no Thanks to
Microsoft for the lost time and effort of the last two days.

And apparently I'm still insecure since I haven't yet downloaded the updates
(Automatic Updates prompted, I said yes, and then nothing happened).

Well, you can read the KB article and assess the danger for yourself. Did
you really expect to get an answer for all of the half a dozen or more times
you posted this question?

I expected that there was likely no fix, but I would ask anyways, being that
this is not my area of expertise. The worst that I thought could happen that
I would find no answer. Obviously you have revealed that I underestimated the
worst.

Instead I would encounter a snotty, arrogant individual who really had no
value added information, but was preoccupied with showing off how smart they
could make themselves seem even at the expense of denigrating others.

Edward,

Suzanne is a very helpful person. You are being "snotty" and throwing a fit
because you can't get what you want. Everyone who answers questions here is
a volunteer, a fellow user of Word, not a Microsoft Employee. This update
has caused a lot of people problems. It has greatly increased the number of
questions appearing on these boards. People are trying to pass on
information as they get it. Your posting the same question numerous times
slows down the response to others, without any purpose. Your question was
answered, correctly, by volunteers, on a holiday weekend.

Yes, removing the update exposes you to a security risk. It is your call.
You can take the exposure and use the product with the exposure, or shut
down your use of Word and Excel and wait. We don't work for Microsoft and we
don't like the situation any better than you do.

She did not call you names or otherwise denigrate you. That you are You owe
her, and the rest of us, an apology.

By the way, are you the Edward H. Sebesta who is tracking the
Neo-Confederate movement?

I am having the same problem, I can't save any files in Office, yet I
did not do a security upgrade.
Thinking it may have upgraded automatically, I went to the Add/Remove
section and did not find any Security Updates list.
I have run a virus scan, Spyware scan, and put my MS Office 2003 CD
back in and ran the "repair" function, I have tried starting it up in
safe mode and tried saving a file that way..... none of this is helping
Can someone tell an non-IT type what he can try and walk me through the
steps
Many thanks
Phil

Thank you Suzanne for posting the link, I never would have recognized it as
being related to the problem if you hadn't.
I suggestion/request to all of you who know so much more than the rest of us
(hear my voice light (deep and mellow actually))....I would have never
removed anything based on the advice of someone I didn't know (have had that
disaster before), having the official page makes me comfortable about doing
it. I only wish I hadn't needed to read through the personal quarrels to find
it. I'm new to the "community", is this typical?
I'm going to try to fix my computer now (cross fingers for me)...and I agree
with (forgot who) thanks a lot Micro....two hours of trying everything I know
before I had time to start a search...
