Can't save a search if search term surrounded by quotes

I have Win XP Pro SR-2 & use classic search. Once I do a search, e.g.
"hosts" (any term with quotes around it), go to File/Save Search, nothing
happens. No dialog box opens & I get no error message. Is this standard or
is there a way to fix this.?

Quotes are invalid characters for file names.

So the Seach cannot be saved as: Files named "hosts".fnd.

I am guessing here, but I assume Windows just balks at the first "
character.

I experimented with some more illegal file name characters.

This still applies to XP...

Saved Search Uses @ as Replacement for * in Filename
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119312

A Search for the following characters:

* gets changed to: Files named @.fnd
? gets changed to: Files named !.fnd
*.* gets changed to: All Files.fnd
/ gets changed to: Files named .fnd

Hi Wesley:
Thanks for the link & for going to all the trouble to look it up. So there
should be a way to save my search using a slightly different search. Trouble
is, I think my search feature isn't working properly. I just did a search for
"Hosts" (no quotes) & made it case sensitive, as only my "Hosts" file starts
with a capital. However, it turned up 27 files, many which started with a
small "h". In fact, a search for "hosts" & "Hosts" turns up the same 27
files.

Also, if I search for host?, I still get all the files.

Any ideas?

Hi Phil,

There should be one HOSTS file. No file extension.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

There may be a hosts.sam (sample HOSTS file) and lmhosts.sam also in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Search
Advanced Options:
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders

I did a Search for HOSTS and found 19 items.

HOSTS File stuff
Hosts file zip
HOSTS File Manager.txt
Original HOSTS file.txt
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File.doc
Cannot Resolve Host Name to IP Address After You Replace the Hosts File.doc
Criteria for Detection in the Hosts File.doc
Differences Between the HOSTS and LMHOSTS Files in Windows NT.doc
Hosts File.txt
How to Use a HOSTS File to Test a Site that Uses Host Headers on an
Intranet.doc
Problems Using Internet Explorer with Incorrect Hosts File.doc
The Hosts File and what it can do for you.doc
hosts.zip
HostsFileReader 2.txt
HostsFileReader.txt
noghosts.wav
HOSTS
hosts.sam
lmhosts.sam

Selecting Case Sensitive did not narrow the results.

A Search for "Hosts" turned up one file, HOSTS.

Thanks, Wesley.
I get the same type of results that you do, where only using quotes will narrow
the search enough...but then I can't save it. I thought that I remembered from
Win 98 that doing something like host? would limit you to host followed by 1
character, but I guess not.

Anyhow, I'm either to save a search to the hosts file & specify that it contain
a particular site that I know is in there or just keep a shortcut to the
....drivers\etc folder. My ultimate goal was to be able to rename the hosts file
at will (to turn it on & off).

Hi Phil,

A couple of options.

This is sort of slick.
I used it to copy and pase my Search results into my previous post. ;-)

But this is your answer.

Rename the HOSTS file on the fly ... a simple one click batch file.

Hi Wesley:
Thanks so much for all these links. I downloaded the RenHosts.bat & it does
what I want perfectly. I was really doing things the hard way (& being
lazy). I even found a hoststoggle utility that I downloaded 2 years ago
that I never used. (there must be a smiley for "dumb").

Anyhow, thank you for everything.

You're welcome, Phil. Keep having fun. ;-)
