Can't resolved names

I've been helping a friend recover from a virus/worm/etc infection, and
the only stumbling block is that IE still can't find anything on the
internet. Pinging from a CLI works OK (through a hardware
firewall/router to the DSL modem), just IE can't resolve a name. This
is a HP, but he has a lot of specialized apps for his work that he
doesn't want take the chance of trashshing with the recovery disc as he
just recovred from other problems (other causes) and had to re-install
all these special apps, a very complicated and time consuming process.
Any suggestions?

TIA,
Pete

You can try to uninstall IE + Outlook Express from Add Remove Windows
Components.
Then use a Magazine Cover CD to install only IE6 + Outlook Express.

If this can't be done or fails to resolve the issue, then perform a repair
installation of XP.

This will not affect installed apps or your personal data.

BAR,

Poor advice by you, yet again. You should Open IEAccess.inf and read these
lines:

IEAccess_Tip="Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer from the Start
menu and Desktop"

[ShowIE]
Commandline="%11%\shmgrate.exe OCInstallShowIE"

[HideIE]
Commandline="%11%\shmgrate.exe OCInstallHideIE"

IEAccess_Tip="Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer from the Start
menu and Desktop"

Add/Remove Windows Components does what the above line says, thus IE is not
removed from the system.

Correct method to repair/reinstall Internet Explorer in XP:
----------------------------------------------------------

To repair IE, you should follow this advice: (for pre-SP2 systems, modify
the IsInstalled flag)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

-or-

Use the IE.INF install method to repair IE.

Thanks for the replies. I take it then, that XP doesn't use a resolv
file the way other systems do.
