Can't remove toolbar(s) - IE6 and Win98

Trying to help my brother-in-law. He's using Win98 (SE I think) and the
latest IE6. Somehow he (or his daughter) as installed a couple of toolbars.
Now he can't even un-check them to hide them. All the toolbars that are
active are greyed out. You can see they're checked (selected) but because
they're grey out he can't hide them. Ideally he'd like to remove/uninstall
them but he doesn't remember how they were installed and I don't see
anything obvious in Add/Remove programs

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
