i am having trouble connecting my digital camera. when i connect via usb it
is automatically detected and attempts to install drivers, then i get a
message saying there was trouble, hardware may not work properly.

This message is in the properties window for digital camera of device manager.
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous
instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Recommended resolution

The driver could not be loaded because a previous instance is still loaded.
Restart the computer. "

I have tried to restart, tried to uninstall, remove device, restart, and
reinstall, but no luck.
any thoughts?

How did you try and remove the drive. You need to open control panel |
system | Hardware | device manager. You will probably see either a yellow or
red mark next to the hardware in question. Right click the hardware and
uninstall. If you can't see a yellow or red mark then look for the camera
and right click and uninstall. Reboot and plug the camera back in. What
happens.
