Can't remove "dead printer" icon

There is a shadowed printer icon in the printer wizard
which says 'dead printer". I tried to delete it but I
cant. It will say successfully deleted but it's still
there. It is connected to LPT1. I'm running Windows 2000
SP4. How do I delete this icon?

1. Do you know how this printer got there? Did you install it at some point?
Did it appear around the time you installed or uninstalled something? What
driver is it using? All these things are potential clues to what is going
on.

2. Are you logged in as a member of the Administrators group when you try to
delete the printer? Do you get any error message, such as 'Access is
denied'? You may need to check the permissions on the Security page of the
properties dialog.

3. As Yuri says, local printers appear in the registry under
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers. Also, network printers
appear in the registry under HKCU\Printers\Connections. You can look for it
the registry in both these places and see what happens when you try to
delete the registry entry.

4. Any file or folder in the C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\PrintHood
folder is shown in the Printers folder. So, look for it here and see what
happens when you try to delete it.
