Is there a way to stop Outlook Express from automatically displaying the next
unread
message after closing the first message??

For example, if I click the X in the top right corner of the message window,
the first message closes and the next unread message is displayed.

Is there a way to close the first message and return to the list of
remaining unread messages??

I would check Options. In Outlook, you would go to Tools->Options, click on
E-Mail Options and there is an option on what to do after you move or delete
an item, which includes "Open the next item", "Return to Inbox", etc.

If you can't find it, I would check with the Outlook Express group.

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.

You can also find some good Outlook Express information here:

In Outlook Express, the only way to do what you want would be to hit
your Esc key to close the message and take you back to your Inbox. The
message that you just read will still be highlighted. Now, you can hit
your Del key to delete it or move it to another folder. The next
message in your Inbox will then be highlighted and ready to open.
