I've got it installed and it seems to be correct. I browsed for the printer
and connected to it to install it (I already had the vista drivers
installed). But when I print to it the job just stays on the vista machine it
doesn't display on the xp machine.

We need a full explanation of what set up you have, You talk of Vista and
XP, Does this mean a network, if so better tell us about it.

I have an XP pro machine with a Lexmark 6170 printer attached via USB. It is
shared as \\home\lexmarkx. I am able to print to it from another XP laptop
with no problem.

We've recently purchased a laptop with Vista. I've enabled file and print
sharing and disabled the firewall. I can browse to the printer and connect to
it. But when I try to print the job doesn't ever print. If I view it on the
Vista notebook it lists the job with no status. On the XP PC it never shows
up.

In the Vista machine try: go to Network Sharing>Add Network Device> browse
until you get XP's Lexmark, and follow prompts to install the right driver.

Here is your fix.

go into the printers and add a new local printer. Give it a new port with
the address you typed in your response to the other person. Then you will
be able to add the printer if you have the driver (it will look for it an
install it). This is a problem if you have XP on the host and Vista on the
client.

Neither of the suggestions worked. Both of them appear to load the printer
correctly but when I print a test page it shows up in the printer dialog box

Just an update.

I found printing to the LPR port too slow. So for now I have put the printer
on to my Vista laptop. Of course that means my laptop has to stay in one
place so the other computers can print to it which defeats the purpose of the
buying a laptop. Also the vista drivers for my multifunction lexmark will
only print. Scanning and Faxing no longer work.

So It looks like I'll have to move it back to my XP machine and just not
print on my laptop.
