Sharing a printer with a Mac

J

Jeff Ciaccio

I have a Vista Desktop that has a wireless router. I have shared a printer,
but I would like my Mac laptop to be able to print to it. Do I install the
printer driver on the Mac or on the Vista machine? If I install on the
Vista machine, is there a special installer? The printer is an HP DeskJet
2445.

Thanks in advance.

You have to install the Printer as a local printer on the machine to which
it is attached, then share it, then on the remote machine, install as a
network printer....

It's hard to answer your question because you forgot to say where the
printer is connected! To the Vista Desktop? To the Mac? Directly to the
network via ethernet or wireless?

You will need to install Vista drivers on the Vista machine and Mac drivers
on the Mac.

You will need to set up file sharing between the two systems and share out
the printer if it is connected to one of the systems.

If you want specific instructions for setting up Vista/Mac file sharing,
please post back with the missing details.

Hi Jeff,

As stated, install the printer on the Vista machine since the printer is
attached to it. Then share the printer on the Vista machine. Install
the driver on the Mac and then configure it as a network printer and add
the printer path (\\VistaPC sharename or IP\printer).

If it's not attached to the PC and has a network card (and it's own IP),
install the driver then add the IP address (if it's not found
automatically which usually happens).

You need to install drivers on *all* the systems that want to print to the
printer.

The requirement is only different in that you install as a local or network
printer, depending on which system the printer is attached to. You might
have to experiment with which system to physically attach the printer to -
it might be easier for the Mac to find the printer on the Vista system than
for the Vista system to find it on the Mac, or vice-versa. .

If the printer is attached to a print server on the router, all the
computers install as network printers. And that can be the most practical
method, as it doesn't require either computer to be on.

I have have an HP DeskJet that is installed locally via USB to my Vista
desktop. I have turned on file and printer sharing, named the workgroup on
the Vista and my laptop PC, and I have shared the printer (printers
properties > sharing > Share this printer > Share name: "HP_D2445").

When I try to add the printer to my laptop, I can see the workgroup and the
Vista machine, but I cannot see the printer. I have even tried to manually
put in the share name, "HP_D2445", but the laptop cannot see the printer.

I am able to use the Internet on the laptop going through the Vista machine
(via a wireless router), so it's not a network issue.

I have opened the File and Print Sharing port in Windows Firewall too.

Please help :)

Thanks!

Does Vista do networking differently than XP? I thought if you set up a
workgroup, you did not have to set up individual user accts to create
shares.

It looks like that fixed the printer on the PC. Now I'm hoping the Mac has
some generic HP DeskJet drivers already installed. If not, I think I just
need to install the driver on the Mac.

One last question. What protocol should I choose on the Mac to find the
shared printer on my Vista box?

Thanks again all!!

Mac drivers here:

No special protocol. Just point the mac to the vista computer like I
stated previously.

Hey Terry,

I have shared the printer and have been able to add it to a PC laptop, but
not my Mac. On the Mac, I see and option for Windows Printing, and in there
"Network Neighborhood" is there, but I cannot see my Workgroup (on the Vista
box) nor the printer.

Any sugesstions? I'm a Mac neophyte, so step-by-step would be appreciated
:)

Thanks
