On my home computer - new Dell with Windows XP SP2 Home edition, I can log
into the XP newgroups and can post a reply to a message, however it won't let
me post a new topic question. When I click on the "New" icon, I get a little
red fist showing and it won't go to the post screen. I have a dialup
connection with Earthlink Total Access and Earthlink Accelerator running. I
also have the Windows firewall and Symantec antivirus running. Any ideas on
what the problem may be? Thanks for your time. I posted a previous message
about the same computer won't let me download from Windows Updates. It looks
for the updates for a minute or so then I get the error message "The website
has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to
view." and error code 0x8024001D.

Rename C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution\DataStore to C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution\DataStore.poo and that
will reset Microsoft Update after rebooting.

You will eXPerience a far better, and quicker, newsgroup posting
by using the Outlook Express newsreader rather than relying on the
web-based newsgroup web site:

Rename the DataStore folder, or the file within it, DataStore.edb ?

"On my home computer" so presumably your post here came from somewhere else.
What newsgroups client do you use at home? Outlook Express? To which
newsgroups server do you connect? To Microsoft's (msnews.microsoft.com)?
Or maybe to a read-only server and why you cannot post?

Not sure really, pretty new to this computer stuff even though I'm 57 yrs.
old!! I just go the microsoft newsgroup site and login. I can post a reply
to message but I can't post a new topic message. I know I don't use Outlook
Express or any of that stuff. I have a dialup connection running Earthlink
Total Access and Earthlink Accelerator, Windows XP firewall and Symantec
anitvirus if that makes any difference. Thanks everyone for you suggestions
and help so far.

Try turning off the Earthlink accelerator. Personally I would get rid of
since misleading users that there is acceleration by only partially
downloading the contents of images is NOT accelerating you connection. Not
downloading some of a web page's content is not acceleration your
connection. You can really speed up your speed by configuring the browser
to not download images at all, but that makes for boring browsing.

Turn off any popup blocker. I don't bother using the crippled webnews
interface to newsgroups. It could perhaps require using a popup to write
new posts, and your popup blocker is blocking that new-post popup.

After reading through this thread I'm not sure I understood what the solution
is. I, too am having this problem. I'm using XP, IE 6.0. I can reply to a
post but when I click on "NEW" nothing happens. My popups are turned off. I
tried the "poo" rename thing, too.

The other thing that happens is when I click on a topic the post doesn't
appear in the right panel. I have to double click on it to read it.

I have the same setup at my office...XP Pro and IE 6 and everything works
fine. It must be some IE setting. Any ideas?

Use OE to view the newsgroups. Click here for this one:

You experts have a way of confusing "rookies" like me. Can you please:
1. Explain steps from the beginning
2. Please do not insult each other
3. Help me to post a new question, I am going crazy looking how to
4. Thanks for a polite reply

Thank you Bob I for your reply but like I said before you guys assume we know
how to do it like you. To answer your question, yes I have a pop up blocker
but at what moment do I hit the CTRL button? Tell me like to a 3-year old,
first you do this, then you do that. Sorry, but I am not computer savvy.
Also, I don't have Outlook, I have Windows Mail.

When you click NEW MESSAGE or POST or whatever would normally load a new
page. Hold down the CTRL key to bypass the function of the popup blocker.
So you would naturally want to do it the entire time y ou are doing
something the popup blocker would normally block.

However - you should setup Windows Mail to get to these newsgroups and then
you have no worries witrh popup blockers.

Setting Up Windows Mail to Read Newsgroups

When you set up Windows Mail for e-mail, it automatically sets itself up
with a news account for the Microsoft Communities newsgroups. This account
gives you access to a wide range of Microsoft related newsgroups. For wider
reading, you'll probably want to set Windows Mail up to read newsgroups
provided by your ISP or another online service provider. To set up Windows
Mail to read newsgroups, take the following steps:

1. Open Windows Mail as usual for example, choose Start E-mail.
2. Choose Tools Accounts. Windows Mail displays the Internet Accounts dialog
box.
3.Click the Add button. Windows Mail displays the Select Account Type screen
..
4. Select the Newsgroup Account item, and then click the Next button.
Windows Mail displays the Your Name screen.
5. In the Display Name text box, type the name you want to use for your
posts. Depending on whether you'll be posting personally or professionally,
you may want to use a pseudonym or a variation of your name.
6. Click the Next button. Windows Mail displays the Internet News E-mail
Address screen.
7. In the E-mail Address text box, type the e-mail address that you want to
use for your posts. You may want to use a variation of your real e-mail
address to throw off spammers.
8. Click the Next button. The wizard displays the Internet News Server Name
screen.
9. Type the name of your news server in the News NNTP Server text box. If
you don't know the name, consult your ISP.
10. If you need to log on to the news server, select the My News Server
Requires Me to Log On check box. Many news servers don't require you to log
on.
11. Click the Next button. If you didn't select the check box in the
previous step, the wizard displays its Congratulations page. Go to step 13.
12. If you did select the My News Server Requires Me to Log On check box,
the wizard displays the Internet News Server Logon screen. Enter your
account name and password. Select the Remember Password check box if you
think the convenience of not having to enter the password outweighs the
marginal risk of storing it. Then click the Next button. The wizard displays
the Congratulations page.
13.Click the Finish button. The wizard closes, returning you to the Internet
Accounts dialog box.
14. Click the Close button. Windows Mail displays the Subscribe to
Newsgroups dialog box.
15. Click the appropriate button:

.. If you want to use Windows Mail's Communities features which include the
ability to see message ratings and rankings and download a list of
newsgroups, click the Show Available Newsgroups and Turn on Communities
button. At this writing, many newsgroups do not support Communities, and in
others, the Communities features appear not to be fully implemented - but
matters may have improved by the time you read this.

.. If you just want to download a list of newsgroups, click the Show
Available Newsgroups, but Don't Turn on Communities button.

.. If you don't want to download the list of newsgroups now, click the Don't
Download Newsgroups Now button. You'll need to download the list of
newsgroups at some point, but if you're currently using a dial-up
connection, you might prefer to leave the download until later.

16.If you chose to download the newsgroups, Windows Mail displays the
Downloading Newsgroups dialog box while it downloads them.
